Issues Addressed

Counseling can offer relief from many struggles one may face in life. After a detailed assessment, clients will work with their therapist to develop an individualized treatment plan to best meet their particular needs.

Adams Center for Counseling works with individuals, families and couples to assist with the following issues:

  • Depression – The term is often colloquially referred to as “sadness” or other related emotions and behaviors. Depression can both be described as a disease or a syndrome. In the clinical terms, it can also be described as a “conglomeration of more than one feeling”. Your therapist will work with you to develop coping skills to understand and manage your symptoms.
  • Anxiety – This emotion can be characterized by somatic, cognitive and behavioral components. With the combination of these factors an unpleasant feeling associated with fear, uneasiness and worry is created. Your therapist will work closely with you to assist in developing awareness of triggers to anxiety and teaching you skills to manage your feelings of overwhelm.
  • Trauma – Life threatening or life changing events affect the mind adversely. Trauma may lead to physical changes within the brain affecting the brain's chemistry, minimizing the person's ability to cope with certain given situations. As a result of experiencing trauma, you may suffer from nightmares, depression, anxiety or flashbacks of the traumatic event(s) even years later. Your therapist will work with you to relieve those symptoms and help you to regain your sense of normalcy.
  • Attachment Disruption – Children who have experienced abuse, neglect and multiple placements are at risk for developing insecure attachments. Such attachment problems impact a child’s normal development as well as the way the child builds satisfying and meaningful relationships throughout his or her life. Parenting a child with attachment disruption is difficult. Parents will be taught techniques to assist in coping with problematic behaviors. The therapeutic process will focus on parent and child repairing the attachment. The child will learn they are lovable and enjoyable and their parent is trustworthy, fun and caring.
  • Social Skills – Social skills training helps individuals to learn to interpret verbal as well as non-verbal communications and other social signals in order to determine how to act appropriately in the company of others in a variety of different situations. Developing good social skills helps to raise self-esteem and increase the likelihood that others will respond favorably.
  • Parenting Skills – Parenting is a very difficult job and parents often find themselves overwhelmed by all that is expected of them. Your therapist will work with you to develop a loving and nurturing environment for your child and at the same time provide the structure and guidance children need as they grow.
  • Self-Esteem – Some individuals cannot evaluate their own self-worth and capabilities. Many individuals develop a “negative self-talk” rather than focusing on their strengths and abilities. Your therapist will assist you in eliminating the negative self-talk and replacing it with more positive thoughts about yourself.
